ROUTES --> Downsman Pub to Foredown Tower (Dyke Railway Trail) 28.1.2006

Looking west from Devils' Dyke

This ride starts at the start of the Dyke Railway Trail, which is next to the Downsman pub, in Hangleton Way. Hangleton is in the North West corner of Hove; as this Multimap map shows, this is quite close to the A27.

Cross the carpark, and go through the gate. Follow the path up between the trees. Near the end of the path, it turns steep for about three metres, up on to a bridge. This goes across the A27.

On the other side of the bridge, the path goes alongside a golf course, with some pretty nice views over to the west.

Go through the gap in the metal fence / gate just after the start of the path, and follow the path all the way until you get to another gate.

From here, continue up in the direction you’ve been traveling, ignoring the gate to your left and also the path to your left (about 4-5 metres up).

There is a golf club house on your right at this point. Continue up the path until you get to a junction on your left. Follow this concrete path all the way to the top.

Warning; in the Summer, the crops that are grown in the fields either side of this path (I think its’ oilseed rape) get quite long, and there are often lots of horrible flying insects swarming around that have a tendency to fly in to your mouth if you're not careful!.

Continue to the top of the path, and when you get to the road, cross over straight away, on to the path on the other side of the road.

Turn left, and follow the path, alongside the driving range (albeit with a hedge separating you from it), through two car parks, and up a section that gets very steep, until the path leads out on to a road.

Here, you need to get on to the road which runs parallel to the path you’ve just been riding up, and continue up until the road bends round to the right, with a small path in front of you. Go up the path to the gate, and go through, on to the field.

Ride up the field, next to the fence, until you get to the first gate. Go through this gate, and turn diagonally left up the path.

Ride across the field, heading towards some trees in the distance, where there is also a gate. Go through the gate, and follow the path all the way down (towards the sea) to Foredown Tower. You basically stay on the same path all the way. When the path turns in to a concrete surface, follow it round to the left, and turn right on to the road which runs past where you come out.

Go over another bridge over the A27, and head down to Foredown Tower. After the tower, continue down the path, which brings you out on to Fox Way.

As previously stated, this ride isn’t a loop, and it helps if you know the area. At this point you’re not much more than a mile away from the pub the ride started at though.
