GALLERY --> South Downs from Southwick Ride.2.2006

This bike ride starts at the top of Downsway in Southwick. One of my uncles used to live at the top of there, and I remember being about 10, on my first mountain bike, and my mum, an aunt, a few of my cousins and I, going for a ride / picnic in the hills above there.

The main purpose of this ride was just to see if there was any potential for starting / ending rides from here, so it wasn't a very structured route as such, rather more a ride up as high in to the hills as I could go in a straight line, and back down again. Just an excuse to get out on a ride that was within close enough range to avoid getting soaked out in the middle of nowhere. As such, there won't be a route guide for this section.

It actually turned more in to an attempt at getting some good photos, so on that note..

The headings for the large versions of the images are a bit tongue-in-cheek.. I ran out of different ways of describing hills / sky ; )

1. This is Old Shoreham Road, heading towards Southwick. I think I'm roughly level with Benfield School here. Quite a miserable day, as you can see.. I was lucky not to get rained on!

2. This is the road called Downsway. This road is on a crossroads with Old Shoreham Road; there is a parade of shops set back from the road, and a subway which goes underneath Old Shoreham Road.

3. This green is at the top of Downsway, and conveniently leads on to the Downs.

4. This,

5. this..

6. this..

7. ..and this, are all views in various different directions from the other side of the fence at the top of the green.

8. This is looking out over Southwick and the sea from the top of the hill.

9. There may have been a compelling reason for me to take a photo of this view, but I can't remember it ; ) I think it's looking North from roughly the same spot as the last photo, so towards what I think is Truleigh Hill.

10. I realised after taking this shot that I was actually on top of the Southwick Tunnel at this point - you can see where the A27 goes in to the hill in this shot.

11. I originally thought that this was looking towards Devils Dyke. I now think it was further around to the right of the right boundary of this photo, but couldn't really tell - I guess it depends on whether or not I'm right about where Truleigh Hill is. The buildings to the bottom right of the picture are on the outskirts of Mile Oak.

12. This is a continuation of the view seen in (11). I wanted to try stitching several photos together, but thought I'd get the standard gallery format for the ride in place first.

13. This is a further continuation of the above two photos..

14. I *think* that this is looking towards Truleigh Hill - I was looking in roughly the right direction (i.e. roughly North), but couldn't tell for sure. I'm really curious now, as there is a trail from Truleigh Hill down towards the coast.

15. These next few photos are more potential stitch-together jobbies..

16. ..including this one..

17. ..and this one.

18. Quite a dramatic looking sky. Luckily it didn't open during the time I was on this ride!

19. This is looking over Southwick / Shoreham. You can see the chimney from the power station at Southwick on the left hand side, and the arms from Shoreham Harbour (if you look closely!)

20. Thought this was a cool shot - I like the contrast in colours between the foreground, the sky, and the hill. This was late in the ride, when the sun started coming out - hence the very bright hillside.

21. Thought this was a good photo opportunity - a cow poking its' head out from behind the bush..

22. I went down the hill a bit to try to get as much of Portslade / Mile Oak in as possible.
