GALLERY --> Arundel to Brighton MTB ride 12.8.2006

1. Started taking pictures slightly late; at this point, you've gone in to Arundel country park, past the lake on your left, and the snack stall on your right. Follow the path along, till you get to a gate. At this point there is a path going to your left; go straight ahead. At the next "valley" between hills, follow the path to the right, up to the gate, go through and follow the path upwards. This is the view back down the path.

2. This is the view up the path. Aim straight ahead; you're heading to the left of the trees that can be seen here.

3. Looking back down towards the coast from further up the hill.

4. At the top of the hill, follow the path alongside the forest (which should be to your right). You're met with this view after a while. This is looking in the same direction the path was taking you in.

5. Go through the gate and turn left down the path. This is incredibly rutted; be careful!

6. After the trees, follow the path as it veers to the right..

7. Until you get to this sign, where you need to turn left.

8. Follow the path down

9. You need to get through this gate; very difficult to do, even more difficult to describe, but suffice to say you need to put your bike up on it's back wheel and maneuver it through - a bit like something you'd find in the Krypton Factor.

10. Turn left after the gate and follow the path down through the trees. There's only one path to stay on after here for a while, and it's very flowing, so I didn't interrupt the riding with more photos..

11. At the end of the path, go through this gate, and..

12. continue up the path..

13. past the houses..

14. When you come to the junction with the main road, look to the right and you'll see another road, practically continuing from the one you're currently on.

15. Cross over and follow this road down till you get to the..

16. ..South Downs Way sign, which leads off to your right again.

17. View in the direction you end up going, showing the bridge that needs to be crossed.

18. After the bridge, turn right and follow the path again, looking out for a style / gate on your left which has the South Downs Way signs.

19. Follow this path along and round to the right.. the afore-mentioned gate can be seen in the lower left here.

20. The path curves round to the right, and goes up here, past the barn.. beware evil smells!

21. At the top, turn right, along a path adjacent to the road.

22. Until you get to the gap which enables you to cross the road, and re-join the South Downs Way on the other side..

23. Follow this path adjacent to the road until you get to a road on the left.. go up here, past this building.

24. Go round the corner till you get to this gate.. go through and proceed up the hill.. it's a lot steeper than it looks here, by the way!

25. Follow the singletrack path up..

26. And up..

27. View over the Downs, roughly North..

28. More ups..

29. Erm.. more ups..

30. The trail opens up a bit; in the distance you can see the gap in the trees which you go through

31. The trail continues..

32. When it opens out on to the carpark here, follow the sign for the South Downs Way, which is straight ahead.

33. Continue along the trail..

34. Chanctonbury Ring in site. Before you get there though..

35. Follow the trail along, though this gate and down through the trees, to the road (the A24).

36. Cross the road, and follow the side ride round the corner to the left..

37. Go past this carpark..

38. Just past the carpark (up the chalky, rutted hill) and to the right is some kind of airstrip - we saw a plane landing there, and this image shows a helicopter parked..

40. This is a helicoptor parked in what is a very subtle landing strip..

41. Nearly back to Chanctonbury!

42. A picture of my bodged spokes - the one I had fixed before the London to Brighton snapped again, so I tied it to another using only blades of grass ; )

43. Follow the path to the left, through the trees

44. Chanctonbury Ring in sight. From here, reverse the directions for the Devils' Dyke / Chanctonbury Ring / Cissbury Ring ride to get back to Devils Dyke.
