Arundel to Brighton bike ride and.. other news..

Posted: 25.9.2006

I've officially broken my record for the longest time taken between completing a mountain ride and getting it written up, but finally, the Arundel to Brighton MTB ride has been finished.

Arundel to Brighton MTB route

I do have a good reason, at least for not having done this in the last two weeks; I sliced through through the "Flexor Digitorum Profundus (FDP)", the tendon which bends the top knuckle of the finger, in the middle finger of my right hand, by falling on to a broken drinking glass in a nightclub.

I had a 2.5 hour operation to repair the tendon, and since then have been going back and forth to the hospital in East Grinstead for occupational therapy, in an attempt to get the finger working properly, without risking re-snapping the tendon.

So.. there won't be any riding or gym for at least 12 weeks, and I have to wear a rediculous looking splint for about 6 weeks, again in order to avoid compromising the repair. Doh!

This has been made worse by the fact that I now have my Dawg back from the bike shop, fresh from a service and a rear brake seal replacement.. but at least I still actually have my finger - it could have been much worse!

Unfortunately, the USB cable for my digital camera is at work, where I haven't been for two weeks, so I've not had a chance to transfer the not-very-pleasant pictures to my computer to upload; these will come soon though - they'll have to - I certainly won't be able to do any rides to write up, so need to write about something to keep the site fresh!

So for now, why not check out the mountain bike ride gallery or MTB routes sections, or perhaps read about my bikes. Chow!

MTB Riding update

Posted: 5.9.2006

So it's been a while since I posted, and I just thought I'd stick a quick update up - an incredibly hectic schedule has dictated that I haven't had much time to dedicate to sorting the imagery from the Arundel to Brighton ride, hence it not being live yet.

However, I've now written the summary for all the images to go in the gallery section for the ride, and have finally finished sorting the images, so I just have to get it all together on the page. Hopefully this'll be sorted by the end of the week.

Had another riding "drought".. we did plan to go for the Eastbourne to Brighton last Saturday, but the sky looked so grim in the morning that we ducked out.

I was glad we did when, later in the day, it absolutely bucketed down.

We've planned to go for it this week; after all, the nights are now closing in, and soon it'll be a difficult job to comfortably finish the ride during daylight hours.

In other news, the Dawg has now gone in for another service; this will be a full flushing and re-filling of the hydraulic brakes, a check of the suspension, and even a clean-up! This is exactly the sort of thing I'm after for this bike; as it's my pride and joy, I want to make sure it gets due care and attention lavished upon it.

In preparation for starting to commute again (I've been using my trusty moped recently), I've purchased a new inner tube and saddle (got stolen from the Fire Mountain after leaving it outside work - doh!), and just need to find a seat post that fits.. although i've only looked in a few branches of Halfords, it's been pretty hard to find one the right size (which I *think* is 31.8mm!).
