Mountain Biking Site Summary for new visitors

Posted: 10.8.2006

So, I thought I'd write a summary of the site for new visitors, to help them find information they're looking for.

Firstly, we have the "My Bikes" section. Being that my Dawg is my pride and joy, I couldn't possibly have made an MTB related site without dedicating a bit of it to the bike.

I'm thinking of transforming this section in to a "Reviews" section, with reviews of the equipment I use, but the architecting of such a section and the building up of the content required takes time that I don't have at the moment.

Next, we have the Gallery section contains step by step guides to the routes that I've written up. Normally it should be possible to follow the routes from the summaries under the images on the thumbnail page.

Each image is clickable, and leads to another, larger version. I started off summarising each larger image too, but this was taking so much time I stopped! From each larger image, you'll find links to the next and previous images.

The Routes section contains more comprehensive instructions for the ride than the Gallery, often with anecdotes from the ride itself.

The Contact section contains a form where ride routes, images or general queries / comments can be submitted.

Finally, the Archive section contains all previous blog posts, back to January 2006 when I started this site.

Of course, there is also a Site Map page that summarises the structure of the site by link; i thought a little summary might come in useful though.

Arundel to Brighton bike ride

Last Saturday we finally managed complete the Arundel to Brighton ride! About 30 miles in total, including the rides to and from Brighton Station, but the actual route being about 20ish miles.

Arundel to Brighton mountain bike ride

The thing about this route that I hadn't realised from the last time I did the ride, is how demanding it is - it did take quite a lot out of us, almost as much as the Eastbourne to Brighton ride.

I did take plenty of pictures of the ride, but won't be able to organise / upload them until next week - I'm currently on holiday from work and don't have a USB cable to download them from my camera here. As it is, I'm writing this whilst logged on to my work computer remotely (not the best use of a corporate VPN line!), so it's simpler to wait.

Overall, a brilliant ride, with absolutely beautiful weather - it's lucky I've kept the sunscreen I bought for the London to Brighton in my riding bag, as I really needed it!

Finally, to the couple from Cornwall we chatted to who were attempting the South Downs Way in a day, I hope you made it, and got to your B'n'B in Eastbourne without getting lost!

A "proper" MTB ride!

Posted: 1.8.2006

This weekend just past was the first proper bike ride I'd done for about a month. I was planning on either the Eastbourne to Brighton or Arundel to Brighton, which of course, hasn't been written up on this site yet.

However, by the time I'd got started, it was too late to go on either of these rides, as they both require at least an hours travelling, to Brighton Station from my house (5 miles), and then to the respective station.

So instead, I went for a nice, fairly local route - the Devils' Dyke to Chanctonbury Ring and Cissbury Ring ride. A brilliant ride; my aims for this ride were long continuous periods of pedalling and as few breaks as possible.

The first stint was from my house all the way up to the Dyke; about three miles of uphill, so pretty good going. Then I got from the Dyke pub to Truleigh Hill without stopping, another good stint in the saddle. This pretty much continued throughout the ride, although I did fade slightly by the end.

All in all, a good ride and some cracking tan lines as a result! ; )
